Revolutionary War Encampment Planned
at the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum

Present day Fifth Connecticut Regiment to feature
Revolutionary War history and traditions on Memorial Day weekend

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (March 25, 2009) – Between May 19 and 23, 1781, General George Washington and French Lieutenant General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur Comte de Rochambeau met in Wethersfield, Conn. to plan the joint military campaign that led to the victory at Yorktown, Virginia, and the end of the American Revolution. The meetings were held at the Joseph Webb House, which is where the Continental General stayed for four nights.

In honor of the 228th anniversary of this important meeting, and the 375th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the town of Wethersfield, the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum will stage a Revolutionary War encampment on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tours focusing on the American Revolution and Washington’s visit will be offered at the Webb Deane Stevens Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the discounted admission rate of $6 per person.

Members of today’s Fifth Connecticut Regiment, a dedicated group that teaches about our Revolutionary War through living history, will participate in the encampment that took place during that historic meeting in Wethersfield. The event will be held next door to the Silas Deane house on Main Street in Wethersfied. The Connecticut infantry will feature musket shooting, cooking, and an explanation of the history and traditions behind war uniforms and the encampment.
